Investigational viral therapy for pancreatic cancer receives international attention

Research led by Masonic Cancer Center investigator Masato Yamamoto, MD, has received international attention following coverage in New Scientist  highlighting an early-phase clinical trial of an engineered oncolytic adenovirus for pancreatic cancer.  The Phase I study, presented at the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy Annual Meeting, is evaluating the safety of the investigational therapy in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer, where the disease has spread beyond the pancreas into nearby tissues but has not spread to distant organs. Early findings from the first three participants, who remained in stable disease following treatment, have drawn international attention as researchers continue exploring new approaches for one of the most difficult cancers to treat.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers, in part because it is often diagnosed after the disease has advanced and because its dense, fibrous tumors can limit the effectiveness of existing therapies.  Dr. Yamamoto’s research is investigating whether genetically engineered viruses can selectively target and destroy cancer cells while also stimulating the body’s immune response.  While much more research is needed before the approach can be shown to improve patient outcomes, the trial represents another example of how researchers at the University of Minnesota are exploring innovative strategies to address cancers that have long resisted conventional treatment.
